Modified Fertility Program for Strip Tilled Vegetable Crops (2022) 1 page
This project demonstrated the fertilizer requirements of strip tilled vegetable crops. All fields were planted in late April to a barley cover crop. In mid to late May 30 cm wide strips were tilled out of the barley crop – these strips were where the vegetables would be planted. These tilled strips were fertilized at 1X, 1.5X or 2X the rate recommended from standard soil tests. The area (60 cm wide) between the tilled rows planted to the vegetable test crops was not fertilized. Sweet corn, broccoli and cabbage crops were grown in the fertilized test strips. Aside from the fertility treatments, standard crop management procedures for irrigated vegetable crops were employed. The barley cover crops were sprayed out after about 3-4 weeks – before they had much opportunity to compete with the vegetable crops for nutrients or space
